Radical Prostatectomy (Surgery)

Tips and advice for any mental and emotional side effects of treatment

I did go for counselling after my surgery and during recovery from surgery. I think it’s important to recognise how you feel about what happens to you with a diagnosis of cancer. Almost everyone I talked to and said I had prostate cancer said something like “Someone I know had it and they are fine now” “it’s something you die with, not from” it seemed to trivialise the situation compared to how I felt.

How this treatment impacted my life the most

After surgery I had instances of intense bladder pain if I couldn’t find a toilet, so during a long drive for holiday travel I had to plan more carefully. If I was someone who liked to travel abroad i think this would have been problematic and even with car journeys at home I did experience difficulties.

If I had to do it all over again, would I choose the same treatment?

Yes

Why did I give this answer?

I think being caught in early stages the treatment ensured a good outcome. Having said that, surgery is not an easy option I think it was about 6 months before I felt I had overcome the physical aspects of surgery
