Radical Prostatectomy (Surgery)

Tips and advice for any bladder or bowel side effects of treatment

Exercise core and pelvic floor as much as you can. Make it a daily routine

Tips and advice for any mental and emotional side effects of treatment

I set myself an exercise regime with targets. Aimed at fitness but also my core and pelvic floor. I was diagnosed in August 2020 and had removal in October - by December 25 ( my picture) I was out running with my dogs which was really difficult . I persevered and managed 1300 kilometres in a year ( or about 30 marathons) . I lost both my beloved dogs in lockdown and Bella in the picture was my rock ( that picture is now a tattoo on my leg). We have two new dogs ( same breed, Airedales ) and we still run and I exercise every day. I couldn’t have come through this without my exercise and my dogs.

How this treatment impacted my life the most

Physically in terms of retraining my body to function without having urinary lapses and coming to terms with sexual change which are both difficult

If I had to do it all over again, would I choose the same treatment?

Yes

Why did I give this answer?

Because for me removal was the hardest choice but the strongest option. It felt after diagnosis like someone said here’s the supermarket shelf pick an option you like. I was looking for a magic remedy and ultimately there wasn’t one!
