Radical Prostatectomy (Surgery)

Tips and advice for any bladder or bowel side effects of treatment

Pelvic floor exercises every day

Tips and advice for any sexual side effects of treatment

I reflected on this being worthwhile if the treatment cures my prostate cancer. At times it’s not so easy

Tips and advice for any physical side effects of treatment

Listen to your body and rest. Start to move and gradually build up exercise as soon as you’re able. Be patient.

Tips and advice for any mental and emotional side effects of treatment

Remain positive and talk to people close to you about your feelings. I found zoom meetings with other men who’ve been through similar treatment helpful. We had very frank and open talks.

How this treatment impacted my life the most

Very tired and lacking in energy for a few months. Erectile disfunction and self esteem has been the most difficult to deal with.

If I had to do it all over again, would I choose the same treatment?

Yes

Why did I give this answer?

Surgery still seems to be the option to get rid of localised prostate cancer, although in my case my psa levels started increasing within 6 months requiring radiotherapy

Radiotherapy

Tips and advice for any sexual side effects of treatment

Difficult to come to terms with. I try to accept it as being worthwhile to beat cancer.

Tips and advice for any physical side effects of treatment

Test when you feel tired. Go for a walk or exercise before radiotherapy session as I felt very tired afterwards. It’s important to get out in fresh air

Tips and advice for any mental and emotional side effects of treatment

Remain positive and talk about your feelings to people close to you

How this treatment impacted my life the most

Attending hospital every day for 7 weeks is a grind and obviously takes over your life. Take it a day at a time and be positive that treatment is worth it

If I had to do it all over again, would I choose the same treatment?

Yes

Why did I give this answer?

I already had radical prostatectomy a year previously. PSA levels increased quickly so electing for salvage radiotherapy gives me the best chance of beating cancer
