Radical Prostatectomy (Surgery)

Tips and advice for any bladder or bowel side effects of treatment

Be prepared to relearn what your body is telling you about needing to empty your bladder. It isn't the same as before the surgery, I had none nerve sparing due to 'complications', so I used several pads a day initially and now on 1 shield. Still get close to being caught out sometimes.

Tips and advice for any physical side effects of treatment

Learn your limits early on, I was, and still am, frustrated as my body isn't recovering as quickly as I want but not a worry for the doctors as at 'my age' it is normal to take just that little bit longer.

How this treatment impacted my life the most

Stopped me going out on my volunteer work at a time when the group was changing, also stopped me completing another project with some railway modelling friends.

If I had to do it all over again, would I choose the same treatment?

Yes

Why did I give this answer?

I wanted the cancer gone! As it was contained I didn't want to put up with the comprehensive list of side effects from other treatments especially radiotherapy and the drugs and timescales involved. RARP was my first thought and nothing altered that even though I did give full consideration to all the other treatments on offer.
