Low Dose Rate Brachytherapy

Tips and advice for any sexual side effects of treatment

Whilst on hormone therapy for 3 months I had no interest in sex, so it did not matter that I could not get an erection. it would perhaps have been much more of an issue for a younger man. i did not suffer the frustration of wanting sex but unable to get an erection.

How this treatment impacted my life the most

i was unable to have sexual relations with my wife, however our relationship was far stronger than a merely sexual relationship and the strength of our bond was in no way weakened by the hiatus in physical relations.

If I had to do it all over again, would I choose the same treatment?

Yes

Why did I give this answer?

I was given 3 options : surgery, radiation or LDR brachytherapy. having been told that the cancer was contained within the prostate and given the fact that surgery had some potentially serious side effects (incontinence, impotence) I opted for Brachytherapy. I was told that the statistics for Brachytherapy showed as good results as for surgery. It is now 4 years since the operation and my latest PSA remains below 0.5. The after effects of the operation were minor, the only long term effect being the need for tamsalosin permanently, which I can live with. Monitoring continues for another year. Once the effects of the hormone therapy wore off my wife and I were able to resume sexual relations. Sadly, my wife passed away (metastatic bowel cancer) in July 2022.
