Active Surveillance

How this treatment impacted my life the most

When I had my 6 monthly PSA test, there was always a bit of anxiety when waiting for the results. When I went to the six monthly review, it was always a different doctor and they hadn’t read my notes and always quoted misinformation. So I switched Hospitals and they were much, much better. I always saw the same doctor and he knew my case.

If I had to do it all over again, would I choose the same treatment?

Yes

Why did I give this answer?

I think the ‘active surveillance’ enable me and the clinicians time to asses what was happening with my cancer. It gave me the space to research other options and make informed decisions.

Radical Prostatectomy (Surgery)

Tips and advice for any sexual side effects of treatment

If you need help, be persistent. Different health authorities or trusts have different responses, some are better than others. Talk to Prostate Uk who give excellent advice.

How this treatment impacted my life the most

I had a laparoscopic radical prostatectomy and initially it does feel quite debilitating, but you will start to recover quickly, resuming most normal activities after about six weeks. I was doing heavy work at the time of my operation, so I took three months off work to recover fully. I now feel fully fit and knowing that my cancer has been completely removed, I don’t have that nagging anxiety of how it might develop.

If I had to do it all over again, would I choose the same treatment?

Yes

Why did I give this answer?

Because I no longer have cancer and it was removed before it had the chance to spread, which would have lead to additional problems.
