Radical Prostatectomy (Surgery)

Tips and advice for any sexual side effects of treatment

Continuing pelvic floor exercises are essential to maintain urinary continence. Either vacuum pump or injection is essential for an erection and whilst dry orgasms are not as intense, they are still very pleasurable. However, both vacuum pump and injection require an excellent intimate relationship with your partner!

How this treatment impacted my life the most

The biopsy was not a pleasant experience and neither were the 24hrs after surgery. but the relief of knowing the cancer was removed was tremendous. Overall, I believe my wife suffered more than me because she didn't know exactly what was happening to me at any given moment, and she worried how I would deal with the treatment mentally.

If I had to do it all over again, would I choose the same treatment?

Yes

Why did I give this answer?

I was an engineer, and to me the treatment choice was simple - if the cancer is not in me, then it can't hurt me further. I was lucky that my cancer was caught early and was fully contained in my prostate - so mentally I always believed that a radical prostatectomy was the right answer for me. My wife and I still have a very active sex life, though it is different now, since I have to use an injection or vacuum pump to get an erection, but that's a small price to pay for being cancer free and alive.
